Abstract (Summary)
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of dissertation entitled "A Study of Gui Fan '?An Illustrated Primer for the Instruction of Women Compiled by Lu Kun (1536-1618)" submitted by Tse Po Chu for the degree of Master of Arts at the University of Hong Kong in August, 2003. During the Ming and Qing dynasty, there were a lot of didactic works and handbooks written or compiled for the education of women and amongst them Gui Fan fHHS, an illustrated primer for the instruction of women compiled by Lu Kun, was one of the most popular. Since its publication, this book was widely acclaimed as a classic for women's education until the first decade of the twentieth century. Therefore it had great influence on women's behaviour in the late imperial China. However, since the May Fourth Movement it has been neglected. This dissertation attempts to explore the background of the publication of this book and evaluate its content in the context of late Ming society. The dissertation has eight chapters: chapter one is a short introduction stating the aim of this dissertation; chapter two intends to give an account of Lu Kun's life and family background; chapter three explores the aim of Lu Kun in writing Gui Fan; chapter four studies the content of Gui Fan; chapter five evaluates Lu kun's view on women education; chapter six discusses the organization and literary aspects of Gui Fan; chapter seven traces the history of the circulation of this book; and the final chapter is the conclusion.
