(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract

This dissertation is a study of the Hong Kong Popular Music Industry from 1930 to 2000 completed from a historical perspective so as to reveal cultural developments, economic bloom and social changes that took place in Hong Kong and how these factors steadily influenced the society in the recent few decades.

Canto-pop is, indeed, a symbolism of the rise of popular culture in Hong Kong. Before stating Canto-pop, the background of these two different types of music and their impacts is also crucial in order to demonstrate that Canto-pop is a symbolism of Hong Kong Culture in the popular scenario. Musically, Canto-pop is a type of popular music evolved from the styles of Cantonese Opera and Mandarin Popular Music of Shanghai. Since the rise of Canto-pop, a local popular music industry gradually has started to evolve and develop. This dissertation is a study of a unique style of popular music and a popular music industry born in Hong Kong, a city where east meets west.

The first two chapters contain brief introduction of cultures and popular music that borrowed from regions of Canton and Shanghai in 1930's and 1950's. Case studies of New Moon Record(M}j"~ J4) and EMI Record(a +~,,~ J4) are conducted into details about their functions, styles and commercial strategies and finally their influences on the development of a society.

Since 1970's, Canto-pop has successfully blossomed in Hong Kong, in the meantime, with a number of record companies gathered as a local popular music industry. Case studies of Capital Artists (.f..?~ J4) and Emperor Entertainment Group (*.t:!t~*"~III) are examples shown in chapter 3 and 4 in order to demonstrate the close relationships and co-operations among record Companies and Mass Media and also the process of record companies transforming into Multi-media Entertainment Groups.

This topic has always been my favourite since years ago. I hope that this dissertation would provide you a better understanding of the Canto-pop and a local popular music industry that affect our society and daily lives.
