Sjuksköterskans specifika omvårdnad av patienter med Kronisk Obstruktiv Lungsjukdom
Abstract (Summary)
Background: COPD is a disease that increasingly affects more patients around the world; by
2020 it is expected to be the third most common cause of death.
Regardless of where in health care the nurse will work with these patients and meet them in
the future.
The purpose of this survey was to investigate the nurse’s specific care competence and if
there are aspects in his or her care. Method: The design was qualitative and data was
collected through interviews. The information was analyzed through a content analysis and
from the purpose a main category emerged the nurse’s specific care competence and five
subcategories: to see the person behind the disease, acknowledge and support the patient,
experience/competence and cooperation with other occupational groups. The result: proved
that all nurses considered specific care competence was to see the person behind the disease,
acknowledge and support the patient. The care competence grew with work experience and
through the qualities they possess and the experience they have acquired an inner tranquility
was formed and the nurses experienced themselves to be more secure in dealing with their
tasks. All nurses considered themselves to have knowledge and competence in treating
patients with COPD. They considered it of major importance that the cooperation with other
occupational groups would be successful.
Conclusion: This survey proved that the nurse’s care competence builds on experience and
knowledge which results in specific care.
