Abstract (Summary)
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled THE ROLE OF THE MILITARY AND MUNICIPAL BANDS IN SHAPING THE MUSICAL LIFE OF MACAU, CA. 1820 TO 1935 submitted by Oswaldo da Veiga Jardim Neto for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in July 2002 Many studies have been published about Macau as a meeting point of contrasting cultures. However, very little information can be found about music in Macau, although music ?like everywhere else ?may safely be assumed to have played a significant role in Macanese history and society. This thesis investigates a particular aspect of music in Macau ?the role of the military and municipal bands. The study begins with an account of the historical evolution of the three principal constitutive elements of Macau since the sixteenth century ?Portuguese merchants, the Catholic Church, and the Portuguese military presence that supported the former two. The history of the bandas de m?ica is narrated in Chapters 2 to 4. Chapter 2 focuses on the development of the military bands in Macau from ca. 1820 to 1912. Chapter 3 concentrates specifically on the history of the first phase of the Municipal Band, from 1912 to 1920. Finally, Chapter 4 presents the events which contributed to the decline of the Municipal Band between 1928 and 1935. Chapter 5 discusses the sources from which the preceding information was gleaned, and investigates the repertoire played by the bands during the period comprised between the end of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. An analysis of a work written specifically for the Macau banda the Hymno a Macau (1896), is given in Chapter 6. The study concludes with a look at the banda de m?ica from a comparative, organological perspective, and an Epilogue offering a brief description of more recent, post-1945 activities related to the banda de m?ica in Macau.
