Abstract (Summary)
The Relationship Between
Journalists and Public Relations Practitioners During Crises
Cassie A. Waugh
The relationship between journalists and public relations practitioners has long been perceived as
strained at best. The Sago Mine disaster brought crisis communications to the forefront when the
media reported inaccurate information during the event. Journalists at a panel discussion made
claims that this could possibly have been avoided had there been better public relations at the
scene. Does a crisis change the relationship between journalists and public relations
practitioners? If so, how does it change? If not, what is the status of the relationship to begin
with? This study examines those questions and sheds light on the issues surrounding crisis
communications and journalist-practitioner relationships.
