An item analysis of the Preoperational Thought Indicator Measure
Abstract (Summary)
The Preoperational Thought Indicator Measure attempts to determine the characteristics of Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development as they manifest themselves in picture books. The purpose of the study was to conduct an item analysis in an effort to determine which of the indicators of the Preoperational Thought Indicator Measure should be eliminated, reworded or remain unchanged. An item response consistency rate was determined for each indicator of the Preoperational Thought Indicator Measure. Those indicators which had an item response consistency rate of greater than 80 percent were determined to have a strong response rate. Of the twenty-two indicators, thirteen were found to have item response consistency rates of greater than 80 percent. The remaining indicators performed poorly for vairious reasons.
