An instructional design for the learning of Q9 Chinese character input method for students with mild intellectual disabilities
With the increasing emphasis in the use of internet and e-learning in education in the recent decades, teachers are aware of the fact that students?inability to take advantage of the computer in education will hinder their learning opportunity. For Chinese students, especially for those junior ones, using computers may not be as easy as we wish as computer keyboards are essentially designed to support input of alphabet based languages. This posts an even greater obstacle for Chinese students with intellectual disabilities since they have limited access to English and the only comfy way that they could express themselves online is through Chinese. Unfortunately, Chinese character input has never been an easy task due to the complexity of the structure of Chinese characters. Among the existing Chinese character input methods, Q9 is one of the easiest methods to learn. In the research, an instructional design for the learning of Q9 Chinese character input method for students with mild intellectual disabilities was introduced, so as to help the students accomplishing the skill more easily. Results show that the design could successfully help students overcome some of the difficulties they encountered during the learning process. They could generally perform the learned skills more effectively and efficiently.
