An evaluation of the treatment of vocabulary in Hong Kong secondary school English textbooks
Title: An evaluation of the treatment of vocabulary in Hong Kong Secondary School English Textbooks
Name: Cheung Chan Piu, Bill
In the present study, the treatment of vocabulary in some samples of three series of locally produced ESL textbooks at secondary 3 level was evaluated against a set of criteria in a checklist developed from the recommendations in the literature and research on the selection of vocabulary and vocabulary learning strategies.
The analysis consists of two parts with the first discussing the selection of vocabulary based on the principles of economy and utility. The online software ?ocabProfiler?and ?ange?were used to check the information about frequency and range about the keywords taken from the vocabulary sections in the textbooks. The second part discusses the designs of the vocabulary learning tasks with reference to the recommendations in the literature on vocabulary learning strategies.
The results showed that two of the textbooks under study compared unfavourably to the recommendations in terms of vocabulary selection with either the inclusion of vocabulary of low pedagogical value or insufficient lexical input for learners to continue their studies at senior secondary level or university. The results also showed that there is a gap between what is pedagogically desirable about vocabulary learning strategies and what is actually included in the textbooks.
In the concluding section of the paper, the limitations and the pedagogical implications of the study are discussed, and suggestions for future research in vocabulary teaching strategies are recommended.
