Ökad effektivitet till lägre kostnad : En kostnadseffektivisering av materialflödet på ICA Sverige ABs distributionsenhet i Borlänge
Abstract (Summary)
This study concludes the results of a Master thesis with purpose to increase efficiency and
reduce the total cost at ICA Sverige ABs distributions unit in Borlänge, also called DE
Borlänge. DE Borlänge is one of five distribution units in Sweden and distribute products to
over 300 stores. One of the problems at DE Borlänge is variation in volumes, which lead to
difficulty finding an optimal way to run the flow.
To get a better picture of how the distribution unit works and where improvements can be
found a model was created. The first step in the model was to map the flow of the products.
Next, some improvement areas were identified which corresponds to the second step in the
model. For further focus, a few of the improvement areas were elected. The third step in the
model was to analyze the elected improvement areas. This was carried out by dividing them
into different alternatives in order to reduce the total cost and increase the efficiency. The
alternatives were:

Alternative 1 – Initial position
Alternative 2 – Move volumes at night
Alternative 3 – Move volumes on Saturdays
Alternative 4 – Improve the capacity factors
Alternative 5 – Increase possible personal assets
To look more closely into the alternatives a model was built. The point with the model is to
optimize the salary expenses for the storage workers. A couple of conditions were made to
make the model trust worthier. These were limits for capacity, breaks and space at the storage.
Each alternative were examined with the model which resulted in that the total cost for DE
Borlänge may be reduced by moving volumes at nights and on Saturdays. It also resulted in
increased efficiency, in terms of number of used working hours. Still, it is worth mentioning
that each alternative resulted in reduced total cost for DE Borlänge.
Conclusions that have been drawn from the results are the following:

DE Borlänge should take advantage of the over-capacity that exists today in form of
space and staff.
By moving times where the products get available, DE Borlänge can find possibilities
to reduce their total cost.
DE Borlänge should focus on increasing the efficiency by trying to enable more staff
every half hour instead of focus on the performance of individuals in the staff.
