XIVThis research regards to the physical, chemical and mineralogicalaspects of the solid residue of the steatite rock by the industries fromCongonhas, Conselheiro Lafaiete, Mariana and Ouro Preto. Thematerial, usually known as soapstone, is traditionally and generallyused on these cities. This knowledge may allow the creation of newuses, as well as new initiatives among different sectors. The mat e r i a lwas taken from the disposal spaces, where it is no longer useful andtherefore remains a problem to the managers and the environme n t .The samples were submi t t e d t o t h e following analyses: a) macroscopicalanalyses, b) electronic microanalysis to verify the chemicalcomposition, c) scan electron microscopic in order to study themorphology, d) gas adsorption to determine the textural features, e) Xraydiffraction to the structural and mineralogical characterization, f)dimensional studies g) and mas s l o s s t o v e r i fy the market viability andapplications.The granulometric analysis shows no uniformity on the mat e r i a l s .The granulometric distribution is heterogeneous, and the majority wasclassified in the scale of a coarse grains. The samples taken from theresidual deposit cannot be used directly by the industries without priorgrounding.The commonest mineral in the steatite rocks is talc, magnesiums i l i c a t e h y d r a t e , a n d i t i s o f l a r g e r commer c i a l v a l u e . I t i s a l s o c o mmonto find Fe, Ca, Cr and Al as contami n a n t s .After sinterization at 1200°C for 2 hours it was observed grainsize and macropore variation among samples, which were chosen asrepresentative of all others. Each one of the analyzed samples had adifferent behavior.The pore diameter varied from 23Å to 47Å. The particle averagediameter was between 101nm e 793nm according to the sample and thecalcination temperature. The sampl es exhibited different behaviorsaccording to the superficial area and pore volume .When calcinated at 1000°C, the interactions with thecontaminating eleme n t s r e s u l t s i n p h a s e c h a n g e s i n s o l i d s t a t e .The densification percentage varies from 1,25% to 7,28% whensinterized at 1200°C for 2 hours. The average density changes from1,92g/cm³ to 1,99g/cm³ for the raw material. Concerning to thedimensional tests the samples shown no different behavior.Few studies on the scrap steatite reutilization have being done inspite of the common use of this mat er i a l . T h e d i r e c t r e u t i l i z a t i o n , madeby the company or the artesian would be essential, considering lowcosts, environmental preservation and new initiatives on social andeconomi c a l f i e l d s .
