by Alves Pereira, Maria Carolina

Abstract (Summary)
This research work describes and analises the acquisition data of the complex onset by 100 Brasilian children between two years and three years and seven months old, establishing comparisons with the results of the acquisition analyses of the European Portuguese phonology (Freitas, 1997) and Dutch (Fikkert, 1994). Clement?s Sonority Hierarchy (1990) is used as substrate to the adopted theory for sufficing the kinds of /r/ production complex onsets in Brasilian Portuguese. The aim of this work was to verify the acquisition order of the different kinds of complex syllabic onsets and the strategies used by the children during phonological acquisition aiming for the target language production. For this the corpus got statistic treatment through the VARBRUL Program which presented the series of linguistics and extralinguistic variables favoring the production of complex onset. The results of data analysis gave subsidies that lead to the conclusion for the universal tendency of the Stages of Acquisition of Complex Onset and the Strategies of Reconstruction of the sequence studied. The data also revealed that the acquisition of complex onset is gradual, although it is not linear: first the complex onset with obstruents and lateral liquids are acquired and then the syllabic onsets consisted of obstruents and non-lateral liquids.
