Más allá del género. Nuevos enfoques de nuevas dimensiones y direcciones de la violencia en la pareja

by Cantera Espinosa, Leonor M.

Abstract (Summary)
The first part of the work is about the inherited paradigm. It is based on the theater metaphor to present the main elements of the cultural drama of the gender violence (scene, script, personages and public). This part summarizes schematically what we know at the moment, what we say and what we do from the gender prism about the violence in the heterosexual couple, that is to say, about the violence exerted by a masculine agressor on a female victim. It describes the long history of gestation, development, justification and concealment of this modality of violence in the couple. And the present process of their social visibilization because of the feminist movements and their ideological, political and mediatic impact. In a provisional balance, stands out, on the one hand, the historical role of the gender perspective at the time of raising the subject like an urgent social problem that must be spoken and discussed publically, understood theoretically and prevented practically. And also, its contribution to the poninting out and deconstructing social myths that work like epistemological, ideological, political and moral obstacles for a theoretical knowledge of the problem and, also, for a practical facing of the same. On the other hand, it is recognized that this approach has projected much light for a theoretical reading of central aspects of the violence in the relations of heterosexual couple in the direction man ? women, , but that also darkens, masks and invisiblizes significant parcels of the general field of the violence in the couple. Concretely, the heterosexual, but the one that works in inverse sense (women ? man) and the one that takes place in homosexual couples: gays and lesbians (man?man, women?women). The second part raises questions in search of a paradigm, identifies some of the main challenges that locks up the hidden agenda of the investigation and intervention in the field of the violence in couples and it contributes arguments for an approach that reaches beyond the gender. The empirical section discovers two sides of the same reality: in one side the heterocentrist and homofhobic vision of the violence in the couples, that is reflected in the answers of common sense of the inquired group. In the other side the difficulty that affirms other non-conventional victims of the violence in couples interviewed (men mistreated by men, women battered by women, men mistreated by women): its difficulty to think, to understand, to communicate and to find social and institutional support in surroundings dominated by one narrow vision of gender (men agressor perpetrator of woman versus women victims mistreated by man). The gender perspective induces, in addition, to visualize the real process of the violence in the couple, in agreement with a descriptive model that provokes a remarkable consensus: the one of the cycle of the violence, that characterizes the sequence throughout which the victim of mistreatment by its lover remains holder, passive and helpless in an infernal spiral of mistreat, domination (masculine stereotype of the active perpetrator man) and submission (feminine stereotype of the passive battered woman). From a theoretical point of view, the representation that this model constructs of the violence in the couples victim whereas helpless person, dominated by an inevitable and inescapable situation, is criticized. Other approaches induce to represent such a victim as an agent relatively able (in certain personal and social conditions) to break the vicious circle that imprisons him/her. The presentation of cases of people who have managed to leave the infernal spiral of mistreat induces to propose the urgency to go beyond the gender, also in that matter. Really, the work does not propose a simple deconstruction of the gender paradigm, neither its invalidation as theoretical frame of reference, but a redefinition of its reaches and limits in the field of the understanding of the diverse modalities and directions of violence in the couple. This simply means to conserve the rich inheritance of the inherited paradigm and, to the time, to bet by a non-reduccionist approach that facilitates the thinking and acting beyond the gender.
