A comparative study of news media in Hong Kong and Taiwan

Nowadays, Hong Kong and Taiwan enjoy a high degree of the press freedom. Due to different social and political background, the development of the news media of the two places was shaped in different pictures. The news media have served different roles and functions with the pace of the social, economic and political development under different systems of the mass media from time to time. Under certain circumstances, the news media have a strong influence in shaping what people think over an issue. However, as a media organization operates in a market-oriented environment, it also has to satisfy the concerns and interests of the readers for survival. With a case study on the operation of Apple Daily in Hong Kong and Taiwan, the similarities and differences of the news media of two places are examined, and the roles, effects and functions of the news media are also illustrated.
