Abstract (Summary)
The last decade the Swedish government has applied a policy that strives at raising the education level in the country. Students invest both money and time in their education, many with the belief that they will get a higher salary in the future. This paper investigates the income differences between the ones who graduate after three years and the ones toy graduate after for years. He investigation will also include to what extent gender, age, living region and the university has on the future level of income. Five education groups will be examined in different investigations. These groups are the graduates from a school of social work and public administration, economists, groups are the graduates from a school of political science, sociologists and business economists. The theories that will be used thru out this paper are the human capital theory, the theory of signaling and the discrimination theory.A regression based on Mincers income equation has been applied to se how big influence the earlier mentioned variables have on the salary. The investigation shows that the fourth education year only was statistically significant for thepersons that graduates from a school of social work and public administration. For this group the fourth year of education had a clear positive influence on the salary. The investigation also shows that women have a lower income than men for all the examined groups except for sociologists. Furthermore the investigation showed that a range of other variables than the form of graduation determines the income.
