Business services play a major role in post-fordist economies. This paper is based on a macro-scale analysis (1980 - 1995) of the locational system of business services in Northrhine-Westphalia, a federal state in Germany. The locational system has developped in a way that the hierarchical dimension has lost importance since 1980 whereas the functional differentiation among the locations, i.e. the cities, has increased. On the whole the locational system proves to be stable.
