Abstract (Summary)
The purpose of this study is to analyze how a conflict between a restaurant owner inGothenburg and a labor union is described in the newspapers Aftonbladet, DagensNyheter and Göteborgs-Posten during the time from the 5th of December 2006 untilthe 31st of March 2007. The labor union put the restaurant in a blockade on the 5th ofDecember 2006 because the owner did not comply with the collective laboragreement. The media paid a great deal of attention to the conflict and high ranking politiciansgot involved. The conflict was frequently compared to the biblical David and Goliathstory. In order to discover how the three newspapers had portrayed the conflict wemade a qualitative discourse analysis. We used theories about news production andlanguage as starting-points.Our conclusion was that the newspapers all reported news about the conflict in similarways. In most cases the restaurant owner Sofia Appelgren was described as David andthe labor union as Goliath. All three newspapers used media scientist Hvitfeld’scriteria for view points in media on several occasions. The most common view pointswere personification, the individual against the collective authority and the conflictview point. The incident was described using many metaphors. We found two types ofmetaphors used frequently in all three newspapers: metaphors of war and of politics. The biggest difference that we discovered was that Aftonbladet was the onlypublication that in some cases made the story reflects well upon the labor union andbadly upon the restaurant owner. Another difference was that Dagens Nyheter placedmore focus upon the political figures involved.
