Un camino purificativo [electronic resource] : negacio?n sanjuanina y desengan?o en El pastor de nochebuena de Juan de Palafox y Mendoza /
In 1643, Juan de Palafox y Mendoza, bishop of Puebla, Mexico, composed the allegory El Pastor de Nochebuena: Pra?ctica breve de las virtudes, conocimiento fa?cil de los vicios in which he defines the characteristics of both virtue and vice. Within the text, the didactic path of Palafox's allegorical Pastor clarifies the natures of vice and virtue to allow for the attainment of spiritual purity, both for the Pastor and the reader. In this thesis, I consider the way in which Palafox models the rejection of vice after the ascetic aspects of Saint John of the Cross's Subida del Monte Carmelo (1584), as well as his subsequent deviation from this model to maintain a practical and ascetic nature. In the end, we will see how Palafox's usage of desengan?o, a term I will define, structures the practical essence of his text and offers a practical means to purity for his congregation.
