Abstract (Summary)
The aim of the study was to describe dental hygienists’ experiences of the physical and psycho social work environment. The study had a qualitative approach with a descriptive design. A total of eleven dental hygienists’ participated and data were collected by semi structured interviews. The material was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results showed that the dental hygienists’ experienced their work environment as motivating, facilitating and straining. The three categories revealed a theme: To be ruled in a modern environment with good relations. The strongest factor that caused strain was described by the dental hygienists’ to be ruled by the time and they also felt stress because of short reserved times. The set-up of certain duties also made them ruled in different ways. The dental hygienists’ worked in new fine workplaces with good cooperation between work companions and with varied duties, which was described as facilitating factors. The dental hygienists’ described that the most motivating factors in their work environment was the good relationships to their work companions, managers and patients, but also to see the result of their work, having an own responsibility and make their own decisions was important. The study has shown that changes of the duties structure and set-ups would give the dental hygienists’ a better work environment.
