This thesis seeks to identify factors that cause countries to discontinue their nuclear
weapons program using the qualitative case study method. Regime change, regional threats
and/or tensions, economic sanctions, and US influence were found to be the most significant
factors in states’ decision to discontinue their nuclear weapons program.
