Stability assessment of nonlinear systems using the lyapunov exponent

Abstract (Summary)
This thesis presents Lyapunov's First Method as an instability detection approach. Stability, in this case, is the stability of motion in the sense of Lyapunov which will be explained at great length. A method for predicting onset of instability (departure) is desired and is accomplished by implementing a short-term Lyapunov exponent, which is called the short-time departure index (SDI). Some additional algorithms are presented that increase the accuracy of the SDI which include a low pass filter and a "Dead-Band". The Hilbert Transformation is proposed as an improvement for future work. A number of tests are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the SDI as an instability indicator.
