Simulation and control of thyristor controlled series capacitors [electronic resource] /

by Pandit, Nakul.

Abstract (Summary)
Summary: Transmission line loading is often limited by considerations of distance, system stability and control of flow. The Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) is a power electronic device which can help in mitigating some of these concerns. It can control the line reactance and provide damping to system swing modes. To understand and control the interactions between TCSCs and the power system, convenient models are required that would allow fast and accurate simulation in order to assess the benefits of the device on utility systems. This thesis investigates the operation of TCSCs, their control and methods of simulation. A power system containing a TCSC is investigated. The control of the TCSC impedance using PI controllers is simulated by two software packages, ATP and Matlab, and the similarities and differences between the packages are reported. The motivation behind this study is to augment and support the PhD level research being conducted by Mr. Ahmed Hosny. The present study represents a part of the work being done on modeling and control of a modern complex interconnected power system.
