Rule Based Experts System for Manufacturing Process Selection

Abstract (Summary)
The thesis involves selecting a manufacturing process by means of elimination of various processes that cannot meet certain criteria. These are those cannot produce the desired shape, process the desired material and those that do not meet the minimum process performance requirements. This has been implemented as an expert system using Jess and Java. Expert systems consist of a knowledge base and a set of rules to infer the knowledge to arrive at the desired goal. The knowledge base for the expert system was built from literature review.some advantages of using an expert system are multiple expertise, increased reliability, good explanation, reliability and fast response. A 3-tier approach was taken to implement this problem, using Java for the user interface, Jess to infer the problem, JSP for flexibility and a database for persistence. The advantage of using a 3-tier approach is a clear demarcation of tasks, flexibility and evolution of the system. It is quite easy to upgrade the knowledge base by adding new rules or modifying the existing rules. The knowledge base is kept in a separate file so this task is best left to a person who is an expert in his field and has domain knowledge.
