Refluxo gastroesofágico patológico : prevalência e sua associação com atopia em crianças atendidas no Hospital Helena Moura, na Cidade do Recife

by Fernandes Costa, Aldo José

Abstract (Summary)
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of the Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and familiar and personal markers of atopy and its possible occurrence in children between one and twelve months old. The statistical data was compiled from patients at the Helena Moura Hospital, Recife, Pernambuco, Brazil.METHOD: The study project was transversal. The patients were all children of less than one year old who had shown episodes of regurgitation for at least three weeks. The patients that attended the program between January and august 2002, consisted of 798 children for prevalence of GERD analysis and a sub-group of 434 children were examined for possible link between GERD and markers of atopy. The diagnostic criteria were based on Rome II Consensus, for GERD and criteria by Martinez, for markers of atopy.RESULTS: The prevalence of GERD was 11,15 % (89/798), higher during the first two trimesters of life. About 25% of the studied children (108/434) presented markers of atopy that were more frequently with children with GERD, but the difference was statistically insignificant, p = 0,07.CONCLUSION: The prevalence of GERD among the group of children examined concurred with previously published studies. Markers of atopy were observed with major frequences between children with GERD
