Abstract (Summary)
(Uncorrected OCR) ABSTRACT In order to examine the eF-fer.tr* of a workshop on parents' knowledge about mental retardation and their attitudes towards their mentally handicapped children, parents of school-age and parents of pre?chool mentally handicapped were randomly assigned to experimental or control CQnditions. One parent per Family, most of the mothers, are invited to attend the workshop. All subjects filled in a questionnaire tapping parents' knowledge about mental retardation and attitudes towards their- mentally handicapped children on two occasions. Subjects in ths * e>:peri mental group attended the workshop before completing the questionnaire for the second time. Results indicated that the experimental and control groups, did not differ on major dependent variables (Knowledge about mentally retardation and attitudes towards the mentally handicapped children). Significant differences were found between parents of school?ge and pre?chool mentally handicapped children on dependent variables. These differences were .associated with parent training and may be influenced by mother's education level in the pre-schaol age group. After the workshop, the Experimental subjects directly increase in knowledge about behavioural modification techniques. MeverthaleB^, attitudes did not change.
