SUBSÍDIOS PARA O PLANEJAMENTO DO BALNEÁRIO DO MAR GROSSO, SÃO JOSÉ DO NORTE, RS: AVALIAÇÃO DE ASPECTOS GEOMORFOLÓGICOS E MORFODINÂMICOS COM AUXÍLIO DE GEOTECNOLOGIAS.
The oceanic coast of the Rio Grande do Sul is divided in three sectors: northern, central and southern. The city of São José do Norte, which is part of the central coast, has asmall beach-resort with reduced urbanization called Mar Grosso Beach. Major negative environmental impacts on this beach are represented by foredunes occupation, urbanizationand garbage dumping. Such problems represent a barrier for the expansion of this beach and a corrective and preventive plane becomes necessary in order to create condictions forits sustainable development. Using this approach, a morphodynamic study was carried out with focus on the morphologic aspects of the beach-dune system throughout 11 km of the São José do Norte, coastline. Using some specific GIS techniques, appropriated areas for the installation of waste disposal and criteria of attractiveness and restrictions for the beachresort were selected. The results showed that volumetric and morphologic changes based on monthty beach profiles increase toward the east jetty as a function of the concentration of wave energy and associated circulation patterns which induce to the coarsening of the beachsediments. Most of the time, changes in dune morphology was minimum except during the spring and summer when winds favorable to sand transport are more frequent and intense. The GIS analysis showed that there are three suitable places comprising an area of 1,045 hectares for installation of the waste disposal. All of these areas display low vulnerability andare located at reasonable distance from the shoreline. The use of supporting systems for taking decisions in GIS is an important tool for generate maps of major and minorattractiveness which can be used for better planning the expansion of the Mar Grosso beach. Criteria such as proximity of the oceanic shoreline and distance from the beach resortcenter were the main factors utilized as attractiveness for its development. The integration of this study allowed the elaboration of a map which display areas of greater attractiveness and areas protected for some legal act. Additionally, areas for expansion of the harbor complex anear important aspect for the future of São Jose do Norte city was also designated.
