Objects and physical environments for health: a science and art look over Oswaldo Cruz Institute Laboratories.
The work brings a new look on objects and physical environments destined to activities involving health research and education. Our investigation points out to both relative physical and emotional aspects of well-being of health environment users, having as a study case, health research laboratories of Oswaldo Cruz Institute ? a technical-scientific unit of Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. The study claims for designers contributions towards a positive transformation of both spirits and well being of health and education environment users, takinginto consideration people?s reactions and feelings of products as well as environments in order to aim their joy and well-being. The present study is both theoretical and practical with aqualitative approach. In order to deepen and expand both subjective and symbolic aspects of health objects and physical environments pointed out in this research, we have chosentheoretical references based on Communication, Semiology, Philosophy and Psychology. We have approached issues such as the relation between physical health environments and healthpromotion; possible relations between Sciences and Arts; aspects of communication among designers and health environments users; public health policies for physical infrastructure and possibilities offered to health design in the field. We have conceived, tested and formatted aworkshop entitled ?Environment, Creativity and Joy?, developed as a differentiated strategy for collecting data and sensitization of professionals involved at health and education physicalinterventions in their own work environments. We have noticed predominating tension when it comes to people relating to their own work space, where they do not just cohabit with objects inthe same place but establish a type of relationship with them. This relationship is not only of a functional order alone, but it is also of a symbolic order, being capable not just to provokefeelings but also positive or negative feelings, re-enforcing the importance of developing both theoretic as well as practical strategies that aid designers and architects with projects that are destined to health and educational areas. Results point out to the use of data-collecting strategy that sensitize and effectively stimulate users´ participation in building and decorating health space projects, proposed in our workshops; change in public health policies in order to consider workers, patients and users´ both emotional as well as psichophisiological aspects; and health spaces evolve as environment health promoters counting on design andarchitecture contribution to the process. We have approached issues such as the relation between physical health environments and health promotion; possible relations betweenSciences and Arts; aspects of communication among designers and health environments users; public health policies for physical infrastructure and possibilities offered to health designin the field.
