OPTIMIZATION OF DEVICE PERFORMANCE IN 1x2 SYMMETRIC INTERFERENCE MULTIMODE INTERFERENCE DEVICES

Abstract (Summary)
The output electric field profiles of 1x2 symmetric interference multimode interference (MMI) devices with single-mode input/output waveguides were examined as a function of the output waveguide separation in an attempt to optimize device performance according to the criteria of maximum device transmission and maximum isolation between adjacent output waveguide fields. It was found that the optimum performance is independent of the waveguide material system and occurs when the normalized output waveguide separation is in a window between what is defined as the maximum device transmission condition and the maximum isolation condition between adjacent output waveguide fields. This concept was expanded to the case of 1xN symmetric interference MMI devices with N > 2. The relationship of the output waveguide separation to the width, length, and area of MMI devices was stated and the tradeoff between device transmission, output waveguide isolation, and device size was addressed.
