Nutritional Status and Socio-economic-demographic Characteristics of Elderly Institutionalised People in Rio Grande/RS.
The Brazilian population is aging in a fast way since the beginning of the 60s, narrowing the base of the population pyramid progressively. In this perspective, the institutionalization can become an important option for the senior people care guaranteeing their health and comfort. An aspect to be prioritized, in this context, is the warranty of a good nutritional status. So, the aims of the study were: to evaluate the nutritional status and to describe the old people socioeconomic and demographic characteristics who reside in ILPIs in Rio Grande/RS. This is a descriptive cross sectional study made with 153 resident seniors in five ILPIs registered in the Sanitary Surveillance, during September of 2007 to January of 2008. The ethical aspects for human beings research were followed. For the investigation of these characteristics, a specific form was used and for the nutritional status evaluation, the MAN form was used. The data were typed in the software Epi Info version 6.04 and analyzed in the software Stata, version 9.2. In order to analyze the data we used descriptive statistics (average, standard and percentile deviation). We´ve found that the seniors resident in ILPIs in this city were configured as women with more than eighty years, white, widows, with low income and low education, coming from the own house or from family house, mainly for they not have a present home caretaker. For the nutritional status, most of them, 50,3% (n=47) had malnutrition risk, 30,1% (n=46) were undernourished and 19,6% (n=30) had a normal nutritional status. So, we´ve concluded that MAN showed as an efficient method for the nutritional status evaluation. The ILPIs are a need and they play important part in the reception and caring to the seniors, however, they need to be supervised in order to they really accomplish their social role, despite of the resident seniors are a vulnerable group to the malnutrition. More attention needs to be given to the nutrition of this population because the malnutrition is one of the main morbi-mortality causes in this population group.
