Abstract (Summary)
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled Natural Landscapes in the Literary Writings of The Eastern Jin (A.D. 316-420) and Liu Song (A.D. 420-479) Eras Submitted by Chung, Ka-Yin for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in February 2003. There is a wealth of literary writings on nature in the Eastern Jin (A.D. 316-420) and Liu Song (A.D. 420-479) eras. The focus of this thesis is on the Eastern Jin and Liu Song writers?views on natural landscapes. Their similarities and differences are identified through comparison of the landscape writings of these two eras. Writers of both eras demonstrated similar attitudes towards nature. Pleasure tours around the scenic country were seen as a quest for spiritual enlightenment. Natural landscapes were seen as the embodiment of Tao. Roaming in nature also became an activity imparted with the positive meaning of sublimation. Despite these similarities however, writings of the Liu Song era offer a very different view of nature very different from that of the Eastern Jin. This can be attributed to the change in the descriptive mode and perceptional approach, which were evident in the Song writers?choice of words and their peculiar word combination. Further study reveals that Jin writers?perception of nature was largely affected by Daoism, while Liu Song writers approached nature through Abhidharma Buddhism. We can see therefore that Daoism and Buddhism played vital roles in the evolution of landscape literature. Through this scrutiny of natural landscape writings in Eastern Jin and Liu Song, the change in the cultural milieu and thinking has been revealed. 3 |10fi^;fEM{^vMi$ffll^7Kjilffi?Jll^f TjSJIIffti'zfej I=l^)ti55ij ' ?7i Mjlfils!
