Abstract (Summary)This thesis investigates the links between the Literature of Misogyny and Literature in Defense of Women in Medieval Castile. The study includes the Greco-Roman and ecclesiastical influences on the opinion of woman during this epoch. The works of misogynist authors such as Giovanni Boccaccio, Pedro Torroella, and Alfonso Marti?nez de Toledo are compared to works by Diego de Valera, A?lvaro de Luna, Marti?n de Co?rdoba, and Juan Rodri?guez del Padro?n, all of whom wrote treatises in defense of women. The thesis also examines the Memorias of Leonor Lo?pez de Co?rdoba as an example of the controversy regarding one woman who defines herself by criteria established by her male counterparts.
