Limited rhapsody poems /
Abstract (Summary)
Limited Rhapsody
Amanda McGuire
Limited Rhapsody is a collection of poems as much as it is a collection of objects,
snapshots, or audio bits—a cookie sheet, Mom’s disappointed face, a Hello Kitty
lunchbox, a Wilco lyric, the Weather Channel’s Local on the 8’s, a red Velcro shoe.
Many of these poems include found material and tangible objects that trigger an
emotional response to love, absence, and sisterhood. The poems in this collection
represent the interiority of emotion and how emotion collides and causes friction with the
physical chores of everyday life, such as driving a car, watching T.V., and going to
dinner parties. Limited Rhapsody investigates themes of pop culture, place, and both
romantic and familial relationships and experiments with the placement of the poem on
the page, form, voice, and narrative and uses these devices to challenge the conventions
of poetry and the reader’s role.
