Abstract (Summary)
Title: The Influencing of Attitudes towards Sustainable Development from a Management Point of View Level: Final thesis for a magister degree in Business Administration (15 points) Author: Lars Dahlgren& Jacob Linusson Supervisor: Per-Arne Wikström Date: 2008-01-15 Aim: The aim of the thesis is to examine how the management in a company tries to influence the employee attitude towards sustainable development. We have chosen to include attitudes that are a part of the company’s organisational culture. Method: We share the hermeneutic scientific view as we believe that knowledge is born within the person that seeks it. The empirical study in the thesis was conducted using a qualitative method. The empirical material was gathered by conducting personal interviews. Results and discussion: All but one company in our study believed, to some extent, that attitudes towards sustainable development are manageable. They are using the same methods to influence both attitudes and behaviour. Because of the fact that behaviour influence attitudes, changing behaviour might be an effective way of affecting attitudes. Contribution of the thesis: The interdisciplinary combination of social psychology and management literature contributes to the uniqueness of this study. Furthermore, we have, from a management perspective, taken the connection between employee behaviour and attitudes into consideration.
