La capacitat representativa dels nens petits amb síndrome de Down -Anàlisi de casos a través del joc-

Abstract (Summary)

Abstract

This work aims at getting to know the representation processes of infants with Down Syndrome. The study focuses on the period that goes from the end of Piagets sensor-motor period to the beginning of schooling (2-4 years). In this period, spontaneous play is the natural developmental space, particular to infants.

Methodologically, this work is based on case analysis. Empiric data were obtained through the natural observation of infants in a situation of free play, with specific but, at the same time, usual materials for their age. Two infants with Down Syndrome and two typically developing infants were followed up for two years, with eight observation sessions for each subject. The recorded and transcribed behaviour was first coded with the system of categories, and then using Field Formats, a tool that better suited our working objectives as it is an open and flexible system that allows for the interrelation between different variables in the same unit of analysis or configuration.

The analyses have provided us with some descriptive results with overall data from both groups, and concrete data related to specific behaviours that can be associated to very concrete learning. Then, the sequential analysis, conducted only with the infants with DS, has shown different behavioural patterns, expressing a timing for the activity and the level of complexity of the action. Finally, the longitudinal analysis has resulted in a more complete vision of the evolutionary period, comparing both groups, with the most significant differences appearing in the relationship between exploratory play and symbolic play.

The conclusions present clear differential features in the cognitive processes of infants with DS, which, from our perspective, are important for psychopedagogical practice, as they have a direct incidence in the convenience of devoting more space and time to the knowledge of the environment, that is, the exploratory activity.
