Institutionalizing the balance, trade objectives and environmental concerns : towards new institutional authority

The interrelationship between rrude objecrives urtd environmental concerm lies at the heart of this reseurch. Afier describing d%ferenttruie regimes and environmentalprotection ugreerncnts, und oflering the general framework qf international law in which the trude-environment-development dehate takes place. this thesis elaborates on the structures qfinternutional institutionul uuthority thut hcrve been created throu,oh these frade regimes, environmental proteclion agreements and developrnent organizat ions. A review of the exis f inp intwnutionul organizations wilI show us their strong points, usefuiness un J weuknesses, and will bring ur to the statement ofthc necessity of ncw institutional uuthority in order to more effectively address the trude-environment-deveiopment issues ut stake. On the one hand, the idea of a newly created Global Environmental Institution would hîghly improve the institut ionul poten fial in this dehate. but i.s Zîkly not a redistic option in the infernutional mena of today. On the othcr hand the option of institutional improvement und betterment of the existing international structures is more rcalisticallyfeasibk, und possibly the only wuy to achîeve New Institutional Authoriv in the area of trade und environment toduy.
