Title: The implementation of code of ethics. How should the work be organized? Level: Final assignment for Bachelor Degree in Business Administration Author: Lina Brandt, David Ramsell and Robert Thunér Supervisor: Ernst Hollander Date: 2008 - May Aim: The purpose of this thesis is to study how a company implement their code of ethics. The thesis will also illustrate the management role in this process. Method: This is a qualitative case study, based on the insurance company If. An interview with Ledarna - Sveriges Chefsorganisation has also been conducted. Apart from studying different literature and scientific articles about implementation a code of ethics, the main focus on this study was the two interviews that where conducted with If and Ledarna. Finally, in the analysis we compared our empirical result with the theoretical material which resulted in our conclusions. In our thesis we have chosen to look at the subject from a hermeneutic point of view. Result & Conclusions: The result of the thesis indicates that different types of support is obligated when the implementation of the codes of ethics are followed out. The literature focuses more on formal support then our investigated reality. The concerns and the involvement from the management are crucial to fulfil a successful implementation. It is important that leaders are role models for the collaborators and acts after the company policies. Collaborators from all different levels should be involved when the work of creating the code of ethics are being held. Suggestions for future research: In this thesis we have only studied the implementation of codes of ethics from the managers’ point of view. We believe it could be interesting to study the implementation of codes of ethics from the collaborators point of view. Through the collaborators point of view it will be possible to see if the implementation actually works and how they think the implementation should be organized. Contribution of the thesis: The expectation of this thesis is to increase the awareness about codes of ethics and the implementation. We hope the readers of this thesis will receive increased knowledge about codes of ethics and also continue to research within the subject. We think codes of ethics and the work of the implementation will be more common in the future. This thesis will therefore contribute with interesting and valuable knowledge about ethics.
