The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the literacy
backgrounds and continued motivation to read of junior high school students with special
needs. This investigation utilized a modified version of the Rhody Secondary Reading
Attitude Assessment, as well as a modified version of the Home Literary Environment
Survey. A follow up interview was conducted to acquire more in depth information
regarding the students’ attitude toward reading. The setting for this study was a rural
Northwest Ohio junior high school special needs class.
