Abstract (Summary)
Title: IT-based DNA-register - How could a whole-covering ITbased DNA-register get introduced in Sweden to get acceptance from people? Author Ajna Hajderovic Course: IVC730, Bachelor thesis Date: 2. January 2006 The main objective of this thesis is to study how a whole covering IT-based DNA-register could get introduced in Sweden to get the acceptance from people. To get the answer to this question I use a qualitative research method. The method is applied in connection with different interviews. I also use the deductive method due to my interest of studying how reality can relate to the theories with the choice of subject. Further on there is a presentation of the existing theories about a DNA-register. DNA stand for deoxyribonucleic acid and is building up with cells that carries genetic information. So called nonsense-DNA, DNA that does not carry any information any genetic information, is being used in crime investigations. DNAregister is a register that contains DNA-profiles from felonies. A DNA-profile is represented as a number of figures and helps police to connect a certain person to a certain crime. DNA-register can be divided into two parts, suspect register and offender register. The persons who are considered suspected of a crime are being registered in a suspect register while the offenders who are convicted of a crime are being registered in an offender register. DNA-register is also connected to the forensic register where all the crime scene evidence, in form of DNA-profile, is being stored. 3 The security of this register is very important because of the personal integrity that is supposed to be in stake, although no information that can cause the loss of personal integrity is allowed to be stored in the DNA-register. This brings me to the question of who is qualified to use the DNA-register. The answer to this question is that there are two qualified authorities, Statens Kriminaltekniska Laboratorium, who are actually doing the DNA-analysis and store DNA-profiles in the database and there is also Rikspolisstyrelsen that is qualified to use the information that is being stored in the DNA-register. This leads me to my final conclusion. If a whole covering IT-based DNA.-register could be introduced in Sweden and get the acceptance from people the right information about the DNA-profile should be given and the fact that the personal integrity would not be in stake in accordance to the introduction.
