"HOW GOOD IS THE STREET?" A CHARACTERISTIC - BASED EVALUATION OF VINE, WALNUT, AND MAIN STREETS, CINCINNATI, OHIO

by CHITTAJALLU, DILIP ROY

Abstract (Summary)
This thesis presents a method called ‘Characteristic-based Evaluation’. Characteristic-based Evaluation is proposed as a method that can be adopted for the evaluation and comparison of streets on the basis of certain chosen characteristics of the physical environment. The research used this process for an evaluation and comparison of Vine, Walnut and Main streets in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. It is an attempt to investigate the quality of physical environment at the street level on these three streets. It has been found that a characteristic-based approach of evaluation can give a clear and comprehensive picture about the existing condition of streets. However, this approach depends greatly on the chosen characteristics and the accuracy of parameters used for observation. There has been an extensive amount of research done on streets and a lot has been written on the essential qualities of the physical environment of streets, and this research uses such characteristics from existing literature as the basis of understanding. Characteristic-based Evaluation can be used to evaluate any street in detail. However, the accuracy of such an evaluation will depend to a great extent on the accuracy of the chosen parameters of observation. Some of the parameters used in this research have been adopted for the sake of comprehension, and may not necessarily be standard measurement criteria.
