Abstract (Summary)
This master degree dissertation analyses the hydrogeological characteristics and the groundwater exploitation pattern in ?Ilha do Leite? suburb and neighbourhood. Central Region of Recife city has been studied, with an area of 22,5 Km2, between coordinates UTM 9107000 and 9112000 north and between 289000 and 293500 east. This part of the city is flat, with altitude ranging from 1,0 to 10,0 meters above sea level. Capibaribe river meanders in this area and receives smallchannelled streams. Predominant climate is Ams?, Köppen classification, with copious rain. It is situated on coastal zone. This area belongs to sedimentary basin ?Pernambuco-Paraíba? from cretaceous. It comprises sea sediments and continental sediments and its south boundary is close to Pernambuco line. On surface it consists of recent sediments of several origins.Beberibe is the main aquifer and nowadays it is being heavy pumped and potentiometric surface has lowered down so much. Salinization problems have appeared at some points. The center and the south of the area, near Capibaribe river is occupied by Hospitals and Health care institutions, what brings risks of soil and water pollution. Beberibe aquifer vulnerability to pollution is analysed and environmental management for medical services is discussed. Groundwater management in Pernambuco state is analysed, including discussion about legislation and the processes for water resources and environmental management in SECTMA (Science, Technology and Environment Secretariat of Pernambuco?s State) and CPRH (Environmental and Water Resources State Agency) both of Pernambuco state government
