Testimonio, recognized as a popular literary genre in Latin America, remains a transitional and problematic genre. My thesis explores the origin of the testimonio, how three widely acknowledged texts, Me llamo Rigoberta Menchú y así me nació la conciencia, Si me permiten hablar and The Little School, are discussed by critics and finally, how a recent Argentine text, Ese infierno, represents a new generation of testimonio, a generation that requires the study of trauma as well. Published twenty-five years from the beginning of the 1976-1983 Argentine military regime, Ese infierno provides an example for remembering and discussing traumatic histories.
