Abstract (Summary)
El efecto del género del hablante en la aspiración de /s/
en el español de Barranquilla, Colombia
by Kristin A. Kiely
This study deals with the effect of gender of the speaker on the rate of retention
and aspiration of the /s/ in the city of Barranquilla, Colombia. The hypothesis of this
study is that the women of Barranquilla are going to retain the /s/ more than the men, who
will prefer aspiration. There are many variables that can have an effect on the use of
retention versus aspiration, i.e. age, social class, word position, and style of speech.
Therefore it is important to include these variables in the study so as to rule out their
effect. In the end, the women of Barranquilla retained the /s/ more than the men and more
than they aspirated. On the other hand, the men preferred aspiration more than any other
variant.
