Effect of impact dampers on the forced vibration of a free standing stack

Abstract (Summary)
Forced vibration response of a free standing cantilever beam (stack) equipped with two types of impact dampers, sliding and pendulum, is investigated. A sinusoidal force is applied at a fixed location and the frequency response function is determined for the response of the stack near its fundamental frequency. The location of the impact damper, clearance between the stack and the impacting masses, and the mass of the impact damper are varied during this investigation. The effect of the system parameters on its motion is studied in terms of the impact pattern, the acceleration attenuation, and the damping produced by the damper. Inherent damping of the stack is low. However, substantial increase in vibration attenua- tion is observed due to the introduction of the impact dampers.
