Depression in elderly people who live in a long-term nursinghome (LTNH): identification and actions in nursing and health.
This study aims at identifying depression and at proposing actions in nursing and health that may be carried out to minimize and/or prevent depression signs and symptoms in elderly people who live in a long-term nursing home (LTNH). Aconvergent-supportive research, which used a qualitative approach, was carried out at the Asylo de Pobres in Rio Grande, RS. The subjects were fifty-five elderly people. Three tools were used to collect the data: for the first and the second ones, a structured interview was used; for the third one, a non-structured interview was conducted. The results of the first and second instruments have been graphicallypresented. Based on the second instrument, a manual counting of predominant characteristics was carried out, according to the Yesavage?s Depression Geriatric Scale. The third instrument used the directions of the convergent-supportive research. Perceptions were codified to establish categories and/or themes. The instruments were applied after the project had been approved by CEPAS, an ethics committee, according to Resolution 196/96. The results show that the elderly people?s ages range from 60 to 105; most are retired widowed women (some are single), born in Rio Grande. Twenty elderly people had depression and six of them had borderline affective disorders. Actions in nursing were directed towards diagnoses regarding impotence, lack of hope, risk of loneliness, changes in the thinking process, and the potential to increase the spiritual well-being; the actions revealed that some elderly people feel happy and pleased with their lives and the institutionalization. The actions in health were: a literary workshop ? listening and telling stories, and related activities -, physical activities; dances, handicrafts; walks;games, such as bingo; and memory workshops. I have noticed that this work has contributed to changes in the lives and routines of the elderly people involved in the research. Actions in health and nursing have been proposed with the objective of helping the elderly people improve their physical and mental health, besides allowing them to take part in some recreational activities. I have noticed that the activities thatwere implemented have already provided happiness and social contact to these elderly people.
