Cycling development in Hong Kong context

by So, Shuk-yee

Abstract (Summary)
(Uncorrected OCR) ABSTRACT Cycling has been widely recognized as a sustainable transport option that contributes to environmental improvement, social vitality and public health. In Hong Kong, cycling development has found its way into new towns, and the government realizes that cycling could play a role in the planning of new towns and new development areas in the future. However, although cycling development has a relatively long history in the existing new towns, cycling is still treated more as a recreational activity than a real modal choice. This study explores various issues in the cycling development in Hong Kong from a local perspective - including the benefits of cycling to Hong Kong, the reason for its slow development in Hong Kong, and a review of experiences of cycling development in new towns - in order to find a suitable role for cycling in Hong Kong's transport system and give recommendations on government's policies toward future cycling planning.
