Abstract (Summary)
The evolution of organizations and the organizational process passes through stages known as the organizational life cycle. Understanding where an organization is in this process isrelevant in the sense that it enables verification of how a company thinks and acts. It is also important to understand how the organizational process is conducted and what management controls are used in each phase. The objective of the present study was to investigate the management controls used in each phase of the organizational life cycle in family run furniture making companies located in the São Bento do Sul/SC, the regional furniture center. The research entailed a descriptive study of 50 furniture companies, extracted from the report of the Sindicato da Indústria da Construção e Mobiliário (the Association of the Constructionand Furniture Industry) of São Bento do Sul. Initially, the relationship between family and property was analyzed, following Gershick?s model (1997), demonstrating the stage where family-run furniture companies are found. A diffuse genetic classification system was also used in order to identity the stage in the organizational life cycle of each company. Results of the study indicate the existence of family run furniture companies present every state of theorganizational life cycle, with greater concentration in the stage of creativity. In regard to the degree of utilization of strategic management, financial-economic and operational controls it was observed that family run furniture companies mainly make use of financial-economic controls and present low utilization of strategic management and operational controls. Lastly, the symmetry between the use of these management controls by the companies and their stages in the organizational life cycle was analyzed, in which the relationship between the degree of utilization of controls with the characteristics recommended in the stages ofdevelopment of the organizational life cycle as set out by Greiner (1986). It was concluded that the companies researched were found to be distributed among Greiner?s (1986) five stages of the organizational life cycle and that they join with what is recommended in the theoretical foundation of the study. The current work falls into the research line of Strategy, in the Entrepreneurship group resource, Innovation and Competitiveness in Organizations, in the Post Graduate Program in Administration at the Universidade Regional de Blumenau
