Abstract (Summary)
(Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of dissertation entitled Conservation Plan for Bowen Aqueduct submitted by CHUNG Kam-choi, Antony For the degree of Master of Science in Conservation at The University of Hong Kong in September 2004 The history of water supply in Hong Kong has come over a ceremonial 150 years since the then Colonial government made such unprecedented commitment as to permanent water supplies for inhabitants of Hong Kong in 1850s. Water supply related infrastructures were built over the past years, which have proven their engineering triumphs by still continuing their quality services and operations today. Given the reality of social and technological advancements, many of these infrastructures like Bowen Aqueduct had to be discarded giving way for the newer systems of water services. Studies reveal that many of these water service related infrastructures, whether having been discarded or not, constitute rich historic, industrial and civil engineering heritage values which, however, have usually been neglected by the general public as well as local government departments in terms of conservation. It is noted that so far no example of such civil engineering site work has been graded or inscribed into the list of declared monuments though such potential heritage sites are existed as Bowen Aqueduct in this dissertation. This dissertation provides for an in-depth understanding of the rich cultural, i.e. historic, architectural and civil engineering, significance of Bowen Aqueduct as an example of civil engineering heritage which deserves attentions from the public and local departments. It follows by a proposal of minimal policies and practical guidelines necessary for repairs, maintenance and management as an implementation part of the conservation plan aiming to preserve the heritage value of Bowen Aqueduct for its sustainability and future development.
