Coneixements previs i rendiment acadèmic a la Universitat

by García Gay, Lourdes

Abstract (Summary)

The thesis is structured in two main parts. On the theoretical basis, one must consider the context of the thesis (changes in the educational system, renovation of University Access Tests, expertise of the teachers, etc.) and the theoretical framework. To assess the previous knowledge of students, especially the development of ideas and procedures involved in learning science, special detail and consideration was given to the revision and investigation carried out within the Piaget framework on formal operations and also to alternative concept approach to scientific phenomena. In relation to the learning capacities as part of previous knowledge, the thesis has focused on the evaluation of the relationship between cognitive procedures and text comprehension.

The first step in the empirical investigation was the formulation of the hypothesis to be checked: previous knowledge of pupils predict academic performance during the first year of Physiotherapy at University. The independent variable is the previous knowledge of pupils when they access to University, evaluated by means of a measuring tool specifically designed for our investigation: the test. The dependent variable is the academic performance of students based on their examination results at the end of their first year of university. The framework of the investigation is the empirical-analytical paradigm, in the category of non-experimental investigation or ex post-facto.
