Comparison and Analysis of Stopping Rules for Iterative Decoding of Turbo Codes

by Cheng, Kai-Jen

Abstract (Summary)
In this thesis, we are going to compare and analyze the existing soft and hard stopping rules, which can efficiently terminate the turbo decoders, with the optimal situation using the 10 fixed decoding iterations and discuss how to set an appropriate threshold for these stopping rules without affecting the performances of turbo codes. The hard stopping rule is simple enough for hardware implementations but not as efficient as the soft stopping rules. Setting the threshold provides the soft criteria have more flexibility to satisfy different applications and a strict threshold makes the soft criteria have better error performances than the hard criterion.
