CHARACTERIZING ALTERNATIVE MOVEMENT TECHNIQUES: QUANTIFICATION OF CONTRIBUTION OF JOINT DEGREES-OF-FREEDOM TO THE CENTER-OF-MASS TRAJECTORY FORMATION

Abstract (Summary)
Human body has a flexible structure which allows him to perform identical tasks using various movement techniques. These different movement techniques are referred as alternative movement techniques which are important in ergonomic and biomechanical studies. In the past, various researches were conducted to qualitatively/quantitatively represent these movement techniques. But all of them had some limitations. Park et al. (2004) developed a general movement index termed “Joint Contribution Vector (JCV). The basic idea of JCVTA is to characterize the movement technique underlying a motion in terms of contributions of individual joint degrees-of-freedom to the achievement of the hand target acquisition. JCV index can be used as a general purpose index and also the computation is simple. Despite its advantages JCV may not precisely and sufficiently characterize a motion’s underlying movement technique. Therefore, to provide a means for accurately and sufficiently representing motions’ underlying movement techniques, the current thesis research aims to develop a new movement index for representing body balance strategies. The new movement index proposed in this study is named “JCVBM”, which stands for Joint Contribution Vector for Balance Maintenance. Given a motion, the JCVBM index quantifies the motion’s balance maintenance strategy by computing contributions of joint degrees-of-freedom to the formation of center-of-mass (COM) trajectory. To demonstrate the utility of the new JCVBM index, an empirical performance evaluation study was conducted. It was concluded from the test that JCVBM and k-means clustering could classify 99 % of stoop and 96% of squat techniques accurately.
