Abstract
The present study aimed at examining the roles of cognitive and affective supports from teachers in studentslearning of English. It was hypothesized that the two kinds of support, which satisfied the psychological needs of competence, autonomy and relatedness, helped students internalize their reasons to learn English and in turn enhanced their learning engagement. Chinese sample. The participants were 266 8 graders who completed an 80-item
self-reported questionnaire. Correlation and regression analyses supported the

supports-reason endorsement-learning engagement relationship. Students would learn English
to meet teachersexpectation when they perceived teachers as supportive. Implications and directions for further studies were discussed.
